About Us

What makes Landmark Baptist Church Unique?

Our Memories “Remove not the ancient landmarks”

Our church is rich in history and we are proud of our heritage. We began in 1964 where the Mechanicsville Post Office now stands. Our name was chosen because we are built on an historic site. Landmark Baptist Church was founded by Pastor E. Leslie Sharp, who is now with the Lord.  Dr. Jim Sumpter, who is now our Pastor Emeritus, was the church's pastor for thirty-three years, from August, 1973 until August, 2006. At that time, his son, Rev. James D. Sumpter, Jr. became our Senior Pastor.  We have been at our present location since 1965 and are conveniently located just 3/4 of a mile east of Laburnum Avenue, or 1.9 miles west of Interstate-295, just outside the Hanover County Line.

Our Mission

We are an independent Baptist church, our desire is to preach and teach God's word as it is to people as they are; both here and around the world. Landmark Baptist supports more than 130 missions works globally, and we have been used to help establish more than 125 new churches throughout America.  Our church feels that our highest priority is to take the gospel to those who are living and dying without the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior. We base our belief on the Great Commission that Christ Himself gave in Matthew 28:19-20.

Our Members

In reality a church is not bricks and mortar, neither is it carpet and pews.  We do have all these things, but if they were gone today the church would still exist because the church is the people. Our church family consists of a great number of ordinary people who have an extra ordinary God. You will find that our family is warm and friendly . We are a group of people who realize, that truly, we are all simply sinners saved by God’s loving grace.
